CR-V oil & filter guide by powertrain (2023–present)

Gas 1.5T and Hybrid CR-Vs share the same oil filter, drain washer, and cabin filter, but engine air filters differ. Using the wrong airbox element is the most common ordering mistake on the 6th-gen CR-V.

Engine oil & filter · Minder explained

6th-gen CR-Vs specify 0W-20. Confirm capacity on the filler cap for 1.5T vs Hybrid. Change when Minder prompts, or by 12 months if it never does. Short-trip 1.5T owners should check oil level often.

Maintenance Minder calculates oil life from engine load, temperature, and trip patterns. Reset it after every service, and log the change in Carmainty so you can spot oil-level creep between visits.

  • OEM oil filter15400-PLM-A02

Genuine Honda filter for most 6th-gen gas and Hybrid CR-Vs.

  • Drain plug washer94109-14000

    Replace every oil change.

1.5T oil dilution from lots of short trips is still a theme—don’t ignore low oil warnings or stretch past Minder prompts.
Check the dipstick monthly and note the level in Carmainty. A rising level between changes is an early dilution clue.

Every oil service

Tire rotation & brake inspection

AWD CR-Vs need consistent rotations. Mismatched tread depths can stress the rear differential—an expensive repair compared with free rotations at oil-change time.

Inspect pads, rotors, and brake fluid level at the same visit. Hybrids use regenerative braking so pads can last longer, but rotors still need a look.

Log tread depths for all four tires in Carmainty—mismatches show up before they cause driveline trouble.

Minder item 2

Cabin & engine air filters

Cabin filter is usually behind the glove box. Engine air elements differ between 1.5T gas and Hybrid on 6th-gen CR-Vs—and both differ from 5th-gen numbers.

Replace earlier in dusty areas, wildfire smoke, or pollen season. A clogged cabin filter weakens HVAC airflow and can cause a musty smell.

  • Cabin / dust & pollen filter80291-TF3-E01

Current OEM cabin element for most 2023–present CR-Vs.

  • Engine air filter — 1.5T17220-64A-A00

    1.5L turbo gas CR-V—different from 5th-gen 5AA-A00.

  • Engine air filter — Hybrid17220-6MA-J01

2.0L Hybrid airbox—do not use the 1.5T filter.

Minder item 6 · AWD only

Rear differential fluid

AWD CR-Vs need periodic rear differential fluid. Skipping it after hard use, towing, or mountain driving is a common path to howling diffs.

Use the Honda-specified AWD fluid for your model. Confirm the exact fluid and interval in your owner’s manual or with your Honda parts counter.

Log AWD fluid services separately in Carmainty so they don’t get buried under oil history.

Minder item 3

Transmission fluid

Most 6th-gen CVT CR-Vs want Honda HCF-2; Hybrid e-CVT fluid is system-specific. Mountainous low-speed driving, heavy stop-and-go, and towing can justify earlier service than the Minder alone.

  • CVT fluid (gas)Honda HCF-2

Genuine Honda CVT fluid. Hybrid: confirm fluid spec in the HEV section of your manual.

Never put generic ATF in a CR-V CVT or Hybrid unit.

Minder 4 / 5 / 7

Spark plugs, coolant & brake fluid

Spark plugs, coolant, and brake fluid appear as numbered Minder items. Honda uses long-life Type 2 coolant—never mix coolant types. Brake fluid is due on Minder 7 or about every 3 years. Follow the Hybrid schedule for inverter coolant when equipped.

Spark plug part numbers are not listed here on purpose: confirm the correct plug for your engine and VIN on honda.oempartsonline.com or with your Honda parts counter.

Record plug brand, gap, and coolant type in Carmainty when these are done.

1.5T turbo — the one to watch

Oil dilution & severe-use maintenance

Honda’s Minder assumes mixed driving. On the 1.5L turbo, repeated short trips—especially in cold weather—can leave unburned fuel in the crankcase because the engine never fully warms up. That thins the oil and can raise the dipstick level above full.

Warning signs: oil level rising between changes, a fuel smell on the dipstick, or oil that looks thin. Check level monthly, change oil sooner than the Minder suggests if your trips are mostly under 10 minutes, and ask a Honda dealer whether any service campaigns or software updates apply to your VIN.

Short-trip winter driving is the highest-risk pattern. If the oil level is above the full mark or smells like fuel, change it promptly rather than waiting for the Minder.

2023+ CR-V Hybrid

Hybrid-specific checks

The CR-V Hybrid keeps the same oil rhythm as the gas model—0W-20, 15400-PLM-A02, and 94109-14000—but adds inverter coolant and hybrid-system inspection items from the HEV schedule. Its engine air filter is 17220-6MA-J01, not the 1.5T element.

Regenerative braking means pads often last longer, but rotors can corrode and brake fluid still absorbs moisture. Treat brake fluid as a time-based item. Hybrid AWD models should also follow the manual for rear differential service.

Hybrid e-CVT fluid and inverter coolant are system-specific. Use only the Honda fluids named in your manual—never generic ATF or conventional coolant.

The real math

What skipping maintenance actually costs

Neglected AWD differential → unit replacement

Vs. fluid service a few hundred dollars

$2,000–$4,000+

Wrong transmission fluid → CVT/Hybrid failure

Vs. correct Honda fluid service

$4,000–$7,000+

Oil dilution ignored on 1.5T → engine wear

Vs. timely oil changes and level checks

$3,000–$6,000+

Wrong engine air filter for powertrain → poor airflow

Vs. matching 1.5T vs Hybrid numbers

Frequently asked questions

How often does a 2023–present CR-V need an oil change?

When Maintenance Minder says so—often between 5,000 and 10,000 miles (8,000–16,000 km)—or at least yearly. Severe short-trip use favors shorter intervals, especially on the 1.5T where around 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months is a sensible precaution.

Do gas and Hybrid 6th-gen CR-Vs share filters?

Oil filters usually match (15400-PLM-A02) and cabin is commonly 80291-TF3-E01. Engine air filters differ: 17220-64A-A00 (1.5T) vs 17220-6MA-J01 (Hybrid).

What extra service do AWD CR-Vs need?

Rear differential fluid (Minder item 6). Keep tire tread depths matched across all four corners. Hybrids also add inverter/hybrid-system checks.

Does the 1.5T CR-V have an oil dilution problem?

Fuel dilution is a known risk on small turbo engines used mostly for short, cold trips. Check the dipstick monthly, watch for rising level or a fuel smell, change oil sooner than the Minder if your trips are short, and ask a Honda dealer whether any service campaigns apply to your VIN.

What extra maintenance does the CR-V Hybrid need?

Same oil and filter numbers as gas CR-Vs (0W-20, 15400-PLM-A02) plus inverter coolant and hybrid-system checks per Honda’s HEV schedule, the Hybrid air filter (17220-6MA-J01), regular brake fluid service, and an annual 12V battery check.

What spark plugs does a 2023–present CR-V use?

Plugs differ between the 1.5T and the Hybrid, so this page does not guess a number. Look up your VIN on honda.oempartsonline.com or ask your Honda parts counter. Replacement is a Minder item 4 service.

Is there an app to track this Honda CR-V schedule?

Yes—Carmainty lets you log mileage, set reminders for each interval on this page, attach receipts, and track multiple vehicles. Free to download on the App Store and Google Play.
