Engine oil & filter · Minder explained

Most 11th-gen Civics specify 0W-20 full synthetic. Typical capacities: ~3.7 qt (~3.5 L) (1.5T), ~4.4 qt (~4.2 L) (2.0L and many Hybrids), ~5.7 qt (~5.4 L) (Type R)—confirm on the filler cap. Change when Minder prompts, or by 12 months if it never does.

Maintenance Minder calculates oil life from engine load, temperature, and trip patterns. Reset it after every service so the next interval starts clean, and log the change in Carmainty.

  • OEM oil filter15400-PLM-A02

Genuine Honda filter for most 11th-gen gas and Hybrid Civics, including many Type R applications—still verify by VIN.

  • Drain plug washer94109-14000

14 mm crush washer—replace every oil change.

1.5T turbo owners: frequent short trips can dilute oil with fuel. Check level monthly and don’t stretch past Minder prompts.
Log oil brand, viscosity, and mileage in Carmainty each change so you can spot level creep between services.

Tire rotation & brake inspection

Rotate when you change oil. Front-drive Civics wear fronts harder—skipping rotations shortens tire life and can confuse alignment wear patterns. Measure tread depth and set pressures to the door-jamb label while the wheels are off.

Inspect pads, rotors, and fluid level at the same visit. Hybrids lean on regenerative braking so pads often last longer, but rotors can still corrode from under-use.

Log tread depths and pressures in Carmainty so the next rotation isn’t a guess.

Minder item 2 · sooner in dusty/sooty areas

Cabin & engine air filters

Minder code 2 covers the air cleaner and dust/pollen (cabin) filter. Replace earlier if airflow smells musty. Engine air elements differ by powertrain on 11th-gen Civics—order by engine, not by model year alone.

The cabin filter is accessed behind the glove box on most Civics. Wildfire smoke, pollen season, and dusty roads justify earlier changes.

  • Cabin / dust & pollen filter80292-TBA-A11

Common carryover cabin element; Honda’s current supersession is often 80291-TF3-E01 (listed for many 2025 Hybrid builds).

  • Engine air filter — 2.0L17220-5BA-A00

    Naturally aspirated 2.0L LX/Sport (gas).

  • Engine air filter — 1.5T / Si17220-64A-A00

    1.5L turbo EX/Touring/Si—different from 10th-gen 5AA-A00. Confirm Type R separately.

  • Engine air filter — Hybrid (2025+)17220-6MA-J01

Civic Hybrid airbox element—do not use the 2.0L gas filter.

Minder item 3

Transmission fluid

Most 11th-gen CVT Civics want Honda HCF-2. Manual Si/Type R use Honda MTF. Hybrid e-CVT fluid is system-specific—follow the Hybrid schedule, not a generic ATF change.

Hilly terrain, heat, and heavy stop-and-go justify earlier CVT service than the Minder alone suggests.

  • CVT fluid (non-Hybrid)Honda HCF-2

Genuine Honda CVT fluid. Hybrid e-CVT: confirm fluid spec in the HEV section of your manual.

Never put generic ATF in a Civic CVT or Hybrid unit. Wrong fluid can destroy the transmission.

Minder item 4

Spark plugs

Iridium plugs are long-life but still wear. Rough idle, misfires, or a sudden MPG drop are reasons to inspect before the Minder lights. Order plugs by engine (2.0L vs 1.5T vs Hybrid vs Type R).

Spark plug part numbers are not listed on this page on purpose: confirm the correct plug for your engine and VIN on honda.oempartsonline.com or with your Honda parts counter.

Log plug brand/gap and torque when replaced so the next tune-up isn’t archaeology.

Minder item 5

Engine coolant

Honda uses long-life Type 2 coolant. The Minder flags the first service; later services come sooner. Never mix coolant types, and only open the system when the engine is cold. Hybrids also have a separate inverter coolant loop—see the Hybrid section.

Do not mix conventional green coolant with Honda Type 2.

Minder item 7 · about every 3 years

Brake fluid

Honda calls for brake fluid on Minder 7, or every 3 years if the code never appears. Dark or spongy pedal feel means flush sooner. Hybrids still need fluid even when pads last longer from regen.

1.5T / Si — the one to watch

Oil dilution & severe-use maintenance

Honda’s standard Minder intervals assume mixed driving. On the 1.5L turbo, repeated short trips—especially in cold weather—can leave unburned fuel in the crankcase because the engine never fully warms up. That thins the oil and can push the dipstick level above full.

Warning signs: oil level rising between changes, a fuel smell on the dipstick, or oil that looks thin. Check level monthly, change oil sooner than the Minder suggests if your driving is mostly under 10 minutes, and ask your dealer whether any service campaigns or software updates apply to your VIN.

Si and Type R owners who track or drive hard should shorten oil intervals and confirm fluids by VIN. A fresh filter every change is cheap insurance on a turbo.

2025+ Civic Hybrid

Hybrid-specific checks

The Civic Hybrid keeps the same Minder oil rhythm as the gas cars—0W-20 and 15400-PLM-A02—but adds inverter coolant and hybrid-system inspection items from the HEV schedule. The gas engine can still run cold on short trips, so don’t stretch oil intervals just because it’s a hybrid.

Regenerative braking means pads often last longer, but rotors can corrode and brake fluid still absorbs moisture. Treat brake service as a time-based item, not only a mileage one.

Hybrid e-CVT fluid and inverter coolant are system-specific. Use only the Honda fluids named in your manual—never generic ATF or conventional coolant.

The real math

What skipping maintenance actually costs

Wrong or neglected CVT fluid → transmission failure

Vs. a timed fluid service

$4,000–$7,000+

Oil dilution ignored on 1.5T → bearing / turbo damage

Vs. timely oil changes and level checks

$3,000–$6,000+

Wrong engine air filter for powertrain → poor airflow

Vs. matching 2.0L / 1.5T / Hybrid numbers

MPG / drivability issues

Neglected Hybrid coolant / brake fluid → inverter or ABS work

Vs. scheduled fluid services

$1,500–$4,000+

Frequently asked questions

How often should I change oil in a 2022–present Civic?

Follow Maintenance Minder. Many owners see 5,000–10,000 mile (8,000–16,000 km) prompts depending on driving. Change at least once a year even if the Minder stays quiet—and consider earlier changes on 1.5T cars that mostly make short trips.

What oil filter fits an 11th-gen Civic?

Honda 15400-PLM-A02 is the usual genuine filter for most 2022–present gas and Hybrid Civics. Always replace the 14 mm crush washer (94109-14000). Confirm Type R by VIN.

Which engine air filter do I need?

2.0L gas: 17220-5BA-A00. 1.5T/Si: 17220-64A-A00. Hybrid (2025+): 17220-6MA-J01. Cabin is commonly 80292-TBA-A11 (or 80291-TF3-E01). Confirm Type R by VIN.

What do Maintenance Minder codes mean?

A = oil; B (or 0 on some meters) = oil + filter + inspections. Subcodes: 1 tires, 2 air/cabin filters, 3 transmission fluid, 4 plugs, 5 coolant, 7 brake fluid.

Does the 1.5T Civic have an oil dilution problem?

Fuel dilution is a known risk on small turbo engines used mostly for short, cold trips. Check the dipstick monthly, watch for rising level or a fuel smell, change oil sooner than the Minder if your trips are short, and ask a Honda dealer whether any service campaigns apply to your VIN.

What extra maintenance does the Civic Hybrid need?

Same oil and filter numbers as gas Civics (0W-20, 15400-PLM-A02) plus inverter coolant and hybrid-system checks per Honda’s HEV schedule, a Hybrid-specific air filter (17220-6MA-J01), regular brake fluid service, and an annual 12V battery check.

What spark plugs does an 11th-gen Civic use?

Plugs differ between the 2.0L, 1.5T/Si, Hybrid, and Type R, so this page does not guess a number. Look up your VIN on honda.oempartsonline.com or ask your Honda parts counter. Replacement is a Minder item 4 service.

Is there an app to track this Honda Civic schedule?

Yes—Carmainty lets you log mileage, set reminders for each interval on this page, attach receipts, and track multiple vehicles. Free to download on the App Store and Google Play.
