Confirm your powertrain before ordering parts. The 3.6L uses cartridge filter 68191349AC while the 2.0T and many 4xe trucks use 4892339BE—they are not interchangeable. 2018 is also a JK/JL transition year, so verify the VIN or build sheet first.

Quick reference

Jeep Wrangler JL maintenance schedule 2018–present at a glance

JL uses an oil-life monitor on many builds, so treat mileage figures as maximums rather than fixed targets. Dust, water, and short-trip trail use still justify earlier filters and axle fluids than the brochure interval—see the severe and off-road section if you wheel.

Engine oil & filter

Many JL 3.6L and 2.0T engines specify 0W-20. Capacities differ by engine—confirm on the filler cap and in the owner’s manual. Reset the oil-life monitor after every change.

The monitor adapts to your driving, but off-road dust, towing, and short trips shorten oil life. If you wheel regularly, plan on changing sooner than the monitor suggests and set a Carmainty reminder at 5,000–7,500 miles (8,000–12,000 km).

Log the exact Mopar filter number in Carmainty at every oil change so the next service starts with the right part.

Every oil service

Tire rotation & brake inspection

Rotate and measure tread at every oil change. Oversized or mixed-terrain tires wear unevenly—keep depths matched to protect the 4x4 system, and replace tires in sets whenever possible.

Inspect pads, rotors, and lines at the same visit. Mud and water packed around calipers speed up wear, so rinse the undercarriage after trail days before you inspect. 4xe trucks add regenerative braking, which can change how pads wear.

Every 15,000–30,000 miles (24,000–48,000 km) (sooner in dust)

Cabin & engine air filters

JL cabin filters sit behind the glove box. Engine air filters load quickly on desert and gravel routes—inspect at every oil change and replace sooner than the chart if the element is packed.

  • Cabin filter (standard)68535621AA

Current Mopar cabin element for most JL / Gladiator gas and 4xe (supersedes 68301863AA). Diesel charcoal variants differ.

  • Engine air filter68257030AA

Common JL panel element—confirm 4xe / diesel alternatives on store.mopar.com.

Every 30,000–60,000 miles (48,000–96,000 km) (severe sooner)

Transfer case, axles & differentials

Rubicon trucks and frequent water crossings need earlier axle and transfer-case fluid than highway-only JL owners. Use the correct Mopar fluid for your axle package and transfer case; fluid type and fill procedure vary.

We intentionally do not list fluid part numbers here: confirm the exact Mopar fluid on store.mopar.com or with your dealer using your VIN before you buy.

Log 4x4 fluid services separately in Carmainty so they don’t disappear next to oil history.

Per engine chart

Spark plugs, coolant & brake fluid

Spark plug type and interval differ between the 3.6L and 2.0T—follow the maintenance chart in your owner’s manual and confirm plug numbers by VIN. Coolant and brake fluid also run on time as well as mileage, so a low-mile truck can still be overdue.

Check coolant level at every oil change, and replace brake fluid every couple of years if you wade, tow, or wheel frequently.

Every oil service

Underbody, steering & driveline inspection

Lifted or modified JLs add wear points: steering linkage, track bar and tie-rod ends, driveshaft joints and boots, and skid-plate hardware. A quick under-vehicle look at each oil change catches loose or damaged parts before a trail day does.

If you actually use your Jeep

Severe & off-road maintenance schedule

Factory intervals assume normal driving. Dust, mud, rock crawling, towing, and water crossings count as severe use—and the schedule shortens. An oil-life monitor helps, but it cannot see water in your axles or dust packed into your air filter.

Water is the biggest hidden risk. Axle and transfer-case vents can draw in water after a deep crossing, turning gear oil milky and quickly damaging bearings and gears. When in doubt, check the fluid and change it.

After deep water or heavy mud, check axle, transfer-case, and transmission fluids for a milky or foamy look, and clear the breathers. Water-contaminated gear oil can fail a differential in a few hundred miles.
Engine oil
Every 5,000–7,500 mi (8,000–12,000 km) in heavy dust, towing, or short-trip use
Engine air filter
Inspect every oil change on dusty trails; replace when packed
Transfer case
Replace sooner than 30,000–60,000 mi (48,000–96,000 km) after water or hard wheeling
Front / rear axles
Replace after deep water; otherwise ~30,000 mi (48,000 km) under severe use
Axle & case breathers
Clean and confirm clear after mud and water
Brake fluid
Every 2 years, or sooner if you wade often
Driveline & steering
Inspect joints, boots, and linkage; re-torque after trail days
Undercarriage
Rinse after mud, salt, or beach use to prevent corrosion

Wrangler 4xe — Sahara, Rubicon, Unlimited

4xe plug-in hybrid maintenance

The 4xe pairs a 2.0L turbo with electric motors and a high-voltage battery pack. Core engine service mirrors the 2.0T—many trucks use 4892339BE and 0W-20—but the hybrid system adds its own checks on top of normal oil, filters, and 4x4 fluids.

Do not stretch oil intervals just because it runs on electric power part of the time. Short EV-only trips can leave the engine cold and moisture-prone, and oil still ages with time. Follow the 4xe schedule in your owner’s manual and the oil-life monitor.

Never service or open high-voltage components yourself. Orange HV cables and the battery pack should only be handled by trained technicians. Keep up with software updates and any open recalls or service campaigns through a Jeep dealer.
High-voltage battery
Inspect per 4xe schedule · check for warnings and fault codes
12V auxiliary battery
Test annually; replace when weak
Hybrid cooling
Check HV battery / power-electronics coolant per owner’s manual
Charging equipment
Inspect charge port, cord, and connector for damage
Regenerative braking
Inspect pads and rotors—regen can leave surface rust or glazing
Brake fluid
Every 2 years—regen systems and wading increase moisture exposure

The real math

What skipping maintenance actually costs

Neglected axle / transfer fluids after water → unit failure

Vs. timed fluid services

$2,000–$5,000+

Wrong oil filter for 3.6 vs 2.0T → fitment / filtration issues

Vs. matching engine filter

Engine wear risk

Ignored 4xe hybrid service → system repairs

Vs. scheduled hybrid inspections

$2,000–$8,000+

Packed air filter after trails → power / MPG loss

Vs. routine element replacement

Hundreds wasted
